New Fish Tank

After about a year of operation I wanted to make some improvements to my Big Aquaponics system. I decided I wanted to do Constant Height In Fish Tank, Pump In Sump Tank (CHIFT PIST) operation. I had been dealing with the need to clean my pump trap quite often and that didn’t line up with . . . → Read More: New Fish Tank

Aquarium Broke

At some point I noticed that the Aquarium was leaking and I needed to do something about it. I took apart the aquarium carefully and painstakingly cleaned the glass of all silicone. Then my Mom and I siliconed the parts back together very carefully. Then had to wait while the silicone cured. Finally I was . . . → Read More: Aquarium Broke

Solids Filtration

In Aquaponics, Flood and Drain gravel beds make really good filters, not only for bio-filtration but also for solids filtration.

However, the water going into my water fall tank was direct from the pump out of the in ground fish tank. I wanted to add some filtration before the water went into the waterfall tank.

This will be a long one with lots of pictures. Back when I started doing Hydroponics I was too cheap to buy proper net pots for my DWC but I happened to eat yogurt regularly from little cups with a lip around the top. . . . → Read More: My “Net Pots” or cups with wicks

Tilapia in Aquaponics

Tilapia Dec 29 2008

I only really recommend tilapia in Aquaponics situations where heating and climate control are a given, like indoors or a heated greenhouse or tropical climate. For tilapia to grow well, the water needs to stay above 70 F. Just to keep them alive, one needs to plan on keeping . . . → Read More: Tilapia in Aquaponics

Channel Catfish

close up Dec 10 2008

Our first fish choice was channel catfish which turns out to have been a very good choice for outdoor aquaponics here in central Florida. Channel catfish can take the heat just as well as tilapia yet they can also handle the cold and will even keep growing well . . . → Read More: Channel Catfish

Getting new fingerlings

reflections and catfish fingerlings Dec 11 2008

The first time we got catfish fingerlings, they were really advanced (large) fish. Most of them had been over 6 inches long when we got them. The second time we got fish, they were much smaller as can be seen in the above picture. These are . . . → Read More: Getting new fingerlings

How to Wash Gravel

Gravel and washing stations

In earlier posts I may have mentioned gravel washing. Let me elaborate on this. First you might ask Why? Why would one wish to wash the gavel before putting it into an Aquaponics System? First, because we want to keep our grow beds fairly free flowing and having sand . . . → Read More: How to Wash Gravel

New Quarantine Aquarium Aquaponics System outside

Aquarium moved outside

Well, getting ready for some new catfish so we moved the aquarium outdoors to become the new Quarantine Aquaponics system. We decided the big aquarium indoors was too much moisture for the house and we needed more storage space in the spare room. Well why not set it up outside? . . . → Read More: New Quarantine Aquarium Aquaponics System outside
